Greatest Love Story

The greatest love I never had
                        stands before my eyes
                        illustrating life and song
                        cloaked in soft surprise
                        Taking me above desire
I dared not dream for long
Wake me not before the cardinal
                        speaks to right his wrong
The purest trust I ever gave
calmed my loneliness with a word
silence brought fears to their death
and peace was all I heard
The longest kiss I never felt
                        whets my lips with passion
There is no other, for my heart
                        is chained to his distraction
                        Chilling realization brings
                        clarity to my soul
subtle reminders - the future prose
of the greatest love story never told
