Leaving the Key

Walking to the door
                        unlocking it
                        turning the knob slowly
                        Familiar sights and sounds
                        lie within my heart until
                        Saddened once again
                        to find whispered passions gone
Replaced with quiet and fading memories
I hesitate to open an old wound

                        Dreams drift past me
                        caressing my pain
                        But looking through me
                        they too
                        say goodbye
                        Flying high
into the hope of another soul
                        Never to return again
                        I go no further

                        Hearing silent voices
                        seeing a frozen darkness
I leave the key to happiness
                        somehow to be lost
on the floor of the old, crumbling home
                        Never looking back
on promises too good to be kept
                        Empty and cold in here
                        I leave this place

                        Coming into the light
                        brighter than the evening stars
more beautiful than a midnight moon
                        A smile graces my lips
                        Steps lighten and quicken
Thoughts mirror the rays of warmth
                        softly to comfort my mind
                        A new and different melody
                        I began to sing
