Gingerly, tenderly, he unwrapped her
His eyes could barely comprehend the
scattered black and purple bruises
random zig-zag stitching and
visible jagged scars upon her heart
He slowly, softly, carefully swaddled her
in clean, fresh cloths of security;
His searching lips found her trembling kiss
To help heal her deep wounds
He held her so close
cradling her safely
to stop her shaking
Looking into her red, tired, swollen eyes
in complete disbelief he inquired
“My God!!
Who in the world did this to you, my love?
Damaging you so deliberately, so carelessly?"
She took his hand in hers,
looked directly into his eyes,
fought back her tears and whispered,
“You did.”
