3 AM

The key would never fit the lock
Sweet fate would have her turning round
The drive seemed longer than before
She went through the door without a sound
                        Finding him still sleeping there
In dreams she couldn’t bear to wake
Her fingers softly stroked his hair
I love you on his skin she traced
And feeling her love he pulled her near
I love you more came his husky whisper
She wiped away one single tear
He embraced her tightly and deeply kissed her
But tonight alone and remembering this
She sighed a longing he would never know
Her hands reached out to a faded bliss
While he slept, unaware of how far apart they’d grown
