How Could You Have Known

Tender moments even though
                        they aren't supposed to be
                        Rushed and careless
                        awkward goodbyes
when you should be holding me

                        I imagined you were trying
                        to explain or justify
                        To make it hurt less
                        trying to look past me
                        while you dared to confess

                        How could you have known
                        What would you have done
Your heart would feel the same
                        and we would come undone
But how could I have known
                        What would I have done?
I'd take you in my arms
                        after you had gone

You can't do anything with knowing
                        yet sometimes knowing is enough
                        You can't promise forever or
                        move closer to the fall
when the waters feel too rough

My mind talks too much for you
                        Things you may not think
                        words you may never say
But it leaves me with loud silence
                        and clear confusion every day

                        How could I have known
                        What would I have done
I'd take you in my arms and
                        tell you you're the one
                        How could you have known
                        What would you have done
Your heart would never feel the same
and you would turn to run

                        How could you have known
                        What would you have done
You never felt the same and

I didn't know how to run
